Rachel Carson, a child of the Allegheny Valley, was a writer and an ecologist. There have been great writers whose descriptions of natural history and stories of the natural world charm and delight readers; and there have been scientists whose work excites the public attention. Rachel Carson rises to a heroic stature because her conscience called for action, not only words. (Painting by Minette Bickel) Read More >

About the Rachel Carson Homestead Association

Our mission is to operate a world-class museum dedicated to Rachel Carson’s life and legacy and to inspire all people to live in harmony with nature.

The Rachel Carson Homestead is the only site in the world dedicated to interpreting Rachel Carson’s legacy to the public.

We stand now where two roads diverge . . . The road we have long been traveling is deceptively easy, a smooth superhighway on which we progress with great speed, but at its end lies disaster. The other fork of the road—the one “less traveled”—offers our last, our only chance to reach a destination that assures the preservation of our earth.

Meet Veery, the RCHA Spokescat

Veery, the RCHA museum and guerrilla marketing spokescat was named after the bird that inspired much of Rachel Carson’s childhood work. She was a feral kitten brought inside, thus protecting the native songbird, small mammal, butterfly and amphibian populations. Veery’s story will continually be told to everyone who will listen, made more special because Rachel had a lifelong, well documented love of cats. Anecdotal evidence will be collected on our influence on people’s increased understanding of human influenced impact on our biodiversity and active decisions to change that behavior.
